By Keri’s side for 20 years and counting.

“I take a moment sometimes and think, ‘Yeah, I did go through that, and that’s a part of my story, but look at me now’,” reflects Keri, a customer who has rebuilt her credit with Capital One over the past 20 years.

Originally from Manitoba, Keri moved to Vancouver in her early 20s, and found herself in a common situation: navigating the growing financial complexities of young adulthood, while balancing work and life.

“Rent, the responsibilities of owning a car, a job that wasn’t paying consistently. Little by little, I was dipping more into my savings, and finding myself more in the hole,” Keri recalls. “It took some time for me to realize the gravity of my debt, regroup, wrap my head around that and then try to dig myself back out.”

Her first step towards retaking control was applying for a credit card.

“Capital One was my first MasterCard®, and it was a game changer in my financial and credit journey. It was still the beginning, but it quickly taught me the responsibility and privilege of having a credit card.”

Keri looked to Capital One for her credit card needs based on the ease of the application process and customer service.

“When I discovered the freedom that credit gives you, and that bit of flexibility and room to breathe financially, that was a magical thing. If I just had a chequing account, I wouldn’t be here. Credit is instrumental.

“Just being able to have the Capital One credit card to navigate my day-to-day transactions, whether it was before my payday or after rent was paid, I had peace of mind and knew that I could manage, and my Capital One credit card was the tool that I used to do it.”

Since starting her journey with Capital One, Keri has built her credit to a better place, and is able to celebrate her victories along the way.

“Knowing I could support myself, living independently and doing my thing, that’s a big sense of achievement,” she says.

“Capital One helped me achieve financial independence. It felt very accessible for where I was at in my life. And when I needed another card, I went back to Capital One, which is a testament to their customer service. I feel like they’re a people’s company, and I’m still a happy customer to this day.”

* If Quick Check pre-approves a card, you can be sure we’ll approve your application, except in limited circumstances. Some of the reasons we may not approve your application, among others, include:

a. There’s been a change in your credit file information, personal information or financial status from the time you receive your Quick Check results to the time you apply for one of our credit cards.

b. You’re not at least the age of majority in the province or territory you live in.

c. Your application is flagged for fraud prevention.

d. You have an existing Capital One account.

e. You’ve applied for a Capital One account in the last 30 days or had an account with us that was not in good standing in the last year. In good standing means not past due, over limit, fraudulent, restricted, or part of a consumer credit counselling program or bankruptcy.

In some cases, we may not be able to open an account for you even though your application was approved. This can happen if we’re unable to verify your identity, or you don’t provide the required security funds if you’re approved for a Secured Mastercard®.
