How Victoria started again with credit.

“Independence is so important to me,” says Victoria, a Capital One customer from Edmonton, AB. “It’s so important to have your own back and be able to support yourself.”

Victoria has Charcot-Marie-Tooth, a progressive, lifelong disease affecting nerves and muscles that there is currently no cure for. “There are a lot of things you don’t have control over,” she says. “So I never want to let anything stop me.”

It wasn’t that long ago that Victoria was faced with an uncertain future. “I was going through a traumatizing divorce and there was quite a bit of debt left behind with me,” she says. “I had no choice but to start over.

“I didn’t know where I was going to end up. Being a woman living with a progressive disease, you’re dealing with a lot of ‘no’s. And hearing that ‘yes’ to credit from Capital One, that was a real pivotal ‘yes’ moment for me, where I was able to take control and start rebuilding my life.”

Victoria started to rebuild her credit by developing healthy habits with her finances. “Make payments on time,” she says. “That’s the biggest lesson I’ve taken away from this journey. Absolutely make your payments on time to rebuild your credit.”

Today, Victoria is thriving. “I can manage my finances on my own, navigate the world outside on my own, take care of my household, manage my nonprofit, and do it all with a progressive disease,” she says triumphantly.

That stability has allowed her to invest in her passions, like being a community advocate and playing wheelchair rugby. “Community is a sense of belonging, knowing there are people that will be there for you no matter what,” she says. “My motto for life would probably be ‘unity’ and ‘community’.”

That “yes” to credit from Capital One was just the beginning of Victoria’s journey. “That ‘yes,’ that belief, it helped me believe in myself, it helped me believe in the power of ‘yes.’ Not just ‘yes’ I can, but I always can.”

Victoria is one of the over 4 million Canadians who’ve gotten a “yes” to credit from Capital One. Ready to start your financial journey? Find out which Capital One product is right for you.
