Marisa’s plan for success.

“Capital One has provided me with the freedom to re-establish myself and build the life I’d like to see for my children,” says Capital One Canada customer Marisa.

Marisa was born in Trinidad and came to Canada with her family when she was nine. She now lives in Calgary with her two kids.

Inspired by the matriarchs of her family from a very young age, Marisa became intent on saving, and was always cognizant of her finances. It was all part of her bigger plan.

“I’ve had my entire life planned out since I was about five,” she says. “I’ve always made lists. I’m a planner.”.

Marisa worked hard towards achieving her goals. However, after a breakup, she had to start over, now with two kids to consider. As a newly single mother, her finances and credit score were on unsteady ground.

“I love my kids, but they’re expensive,” Marisa says with a smile. To support her two kids, Marisa began working multiple jobs to rebuild her life and her credit.

First, to start rebuilding, she needed to find the right credit card. Marisa started doing her own research to see what was out there before coming across Capital One. “Capital One has helped me a lot. I’ve used my credit card to help build back my credit.”

Marisa knows firsthand that the journey isn’t easy, or fast. “At first I may not have always felt like things were going my way, but if I look back, I know I’ve made steps.”

Marisa is making more progress every day. She’s now re-focused on her goals, which include providing more opportunities for her children. “I wanted to put my kids in better schools. I wanted to do activities with them. I just really wanted to take care of my kids and give them opportunities to have a better life than I did.”

She’s on track, and along with seeing an increase in her credit, Marisa is also feeling that success through her mental wellbeing. “I feel a lot freer, a lot lighter, like I’m on the right path,” she says. “When I think about Capital One, I think about freedom, choice, stability, opportunity and, most importantly, seeing my kids smile.”

“Capital One should continue to provide opportunities for people like me who just need a push to get over that hump,” she says. Rebuilding her credit as a single mother has allowed Marisa to reset her goals and strive for even more. “I’m budgeting, I’m saving, I’m looking to buy my first home.”

“To me credit means being able to build the future you want.” Marisa’s path may not have always been linear, but her journey has always been pointed towards success.
